Well into production on their 21st season the show exploded into a cultural phenomenon in 1990 and has remained one of the most groundbreaking and innovative entertainment franchises, recognizable throughout the world. Cartoonist Matt Gorening created the infamous Simpsons family: Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie - all now identifiable by silhouettes alone. Homer Simpson is the head of the family and works as a safety inspector at the local nuclear power plant; Marge tries to keep the peace in her household, Bart is a mischievous ten-year-old who loves to pull pranks on authority figures; eight-year-old Lisa is an intelligent, saxophone-playing vegetarian; Maggie conveys emotions by sucking on her pacifier. Matt Groening created the Simpsons family based on his own: parents Marge and Homer, sisters Lisa and Maggie, and his alter ego, Bart, whose name is an anagram of brat. Gorening suggested the cartoon cersion of his family when writer-producer James L. Brooks was looking for a property to develop into short segments for use on the sketch-comedy series "The Tracey Ullman Show." The animated family first appeared on the Ullman program itself in 1987 and had its debut as a regular series on January 14, 1990. The show has won multiple Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award and numerous additional accolades. The actors who gave voice to the Simpsons and other Springfield characters are Dan Castellaneta (Homer, Krusty, Grampa), Julie Kavner (Marge, Patty, Selma), Nancy Cartwright (Bart), Yeardley Smith (Lisa), Hank Azaria (Moe, Apu, Chief Wiggum) and Harry Shearer (Flanders, Skinner, Otto), One episode of this historic series takes nine months to produce from script to broadcast. Known for its sophisticated writing, irreverent slapstick and subversive humor, the show combines jokes for the sophisticated viewer with straightforward physical comedy, serving up something for everyone. |

All rights reserved. © 2009 USPS, price, plate numbers, barcode, USPS logo The Simpsons Don't have a cow when we tell you that "The Simpsons" is celebrating its 20th year as a regularly scheduled half-hour series in 2009, making it the longest running prime-time series in American television history. Many critics called it the best show on the air. Cartoonist Matt Groening named the Simpsons after his own family; parents Marge and Homer, sisters Lisa and Maggie, and his alter ego, Bart, whose name is an anagram of brat. These animated characters, now pop culture icons, first appeared as short segments created for the sketch-comedy series "The Tracey Ullman Show" in 1987. "The Simpsons" made its debut as a regular series on January 14, 1990. The shows shocking colors - the blue of Marge's hair, for example, amd the yellow skin - were intended at first to offset the simple design of the characters. By now, however, the vivid color palette has become part of the show's appeal. Other factors contributing to its success include sophisticated writing combined with irreverent slapstick - such as "Don't have a cow, man!" - are commonly imitated, along with Homer's exclamation "D'oh!" The emotional bond shared by the characters is central to the show's magic. Homer, a slave to appetite and whim, is the nominal head of the household, but the more levelheaded Marge seems to be the only one really in charge. When underachieving, mischievous Bart first appeared, he was viewed with alarm as a counterculture insurgent; today, he is generally regarded with less worry and more affection. Lisa, the intellectual in the family, is sometimes isolated by virtue of her high-mindedness; baby sister Maggie hardly speaks, preferring to simply suck on her pacifier. "The Simpsons Movie", released in 2007, was a number-one hit at the box office, indicating that this popular family will be around for years to come. |
