Illegal Stamps
Any stamp not authorized by an issuing country is illegal, including those purporting to be from territories of larger countries. For a complete explanation and set of definitions around illegal stamps see our Notes page. |
Countries that are the subject of illegal stamps will traditionally issue circulars through the Universal Postal Union. The entries below are linked to the applicable circular where appropriate. Circulars may refer to the problem in general from the applicable country or may refer to the specific illegal stamp issue. |
Mauritania Illegal Stamps Illegal postage stamp issues produced in the name of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. Souvenir Sheet |
Mauritania Illegal Simpsons Souvenir Sheet
Denomination: 60 UM x 9 Size: 13.8 cm (H) x 13.3 cm (W) Perforation: 13.4 (?) Dated: 2003 UPU Circular: 161 on 28 April 2003 Gummed Eight stamps, four wide by two high, with border "The Simpsons". Each stamp has "2003", "60 UM" (i.e., 60 ougouyas) and "Republique Islamique de Mauritanie". The Universal Postal Union issued circular 161 for Mauritania, on 28 April 2003 listing this specific sheet (and a dozen others) as illegal, noting there were at least 95 different illegal stamps released. All legal Mauritania stamps issued that year include the name of the country in Arabic and address serious subjects. Documentation on official stamps can be found registered with the Universal Postal Union. The bulletin stated; "Kindly inform all Union member countries and all our philatelic partners within the World Association for the Development of Philately that we are greatly concerned by the continuing proliferation of illegal postage stamps, a phenomenon of which our postal administration is a victim." "We have just learnt of the appearance of a whole series of fraudulent postage stamps inscribed "REPUBLIQUE ISLAMIQUE DE MAURITANIE" on various websites and in philatelic promotional publications. We have recorded no fewer than 95 illegal stamps." This issue was described as follows; "One miniature sheet containing nine stamps, each stamp featuring a different scene from the television series "The Simpsons". The miniature sheet is inscribed "THE SIMPSONS" at the top. The value shown on each stamp is 60 UM, and each stamp is inscribed with the year 2003." Each image on the stamps below was (illegally) taken from The Simpsons 2003 Fun Calendar. We supply additional details below. Ironically these images (Homer chasing chocolate bunnies, Burns wearing a Gorilla vest, etc.) are both memorable and are images that would never be used on a legal stamp. |
