Comic Book Guy: The Comic Book #1 Comic Book Guy #1  (Jul 2010)
   The Comic Book

At last! Comic book-dom's portly purveyor of four-color fiction has his own comic mini-series!

Just imagine what is in store for you when an entire comic book title is given over to explore the adventures and pet peeves of one of the comic industry's very own. Is Comic Book Guy destined to be the subject of a story arc that ranks among such notable classics as Watchmen, Maus: A Survivor's Tale, The Dark Knight Returns, Marvels, and X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga? And will he live to tell - or, at the very least, blog - the tale that will make fanboys weep and bring a nation to its knees?

The cover and first three pages of this issue provides the four different covers illustrated here. Each cover pays homage to and parodies four classic comic covers described below.

Comic Book Guy: The Comic Book #1: Cover 1 Fantastic Four #1

The front cover pays homage to the original Fantastic Four #1 cover from November 1961. The positioning, color and typography of the lettering in the title and the box to the right, the person running into Moe's on the right, Marge standing to the right of a crushed car, even the cracks in the street, are all mirrored across the original cover and the new cover. Of course, the cover of Simpsons Comics #1 had a similar cover!   (Continues below)

Comic Book Guy: The Comic Book #1: Cover 2 Superman Vol. 2 #75

Cover 2 pays homage to another of the most famous comic issues of all time, Superman Vol. 2 #75, the Death of Superman issue from January 1993. There were several covers, and Bongo chose wisely, as this one incorporates the best elements of all the covers. Once again, the typography, the buildings in the rear (representing the Daily Planet), even the angle of pole holding Superman's cape and the positioning of Agnes Skinner's arms and hands are all matched cover to cover.

Comic Book Guy: The Comic Book #1: Cover 3 Avengers #56

Cover 3 shown above pays homage to Avengers #56 from September 1968. Included in adapting all the elements on the cover they mirrored the "Marvel Comics Group" logo on the upper left with a "Bongo Comics Group" logo and updated the title from "Death Be Not Proud!" to "Debt Be Not Paid!". Perhaps reading too much into the cover I particularly like the idea of our immigrant Apu serving as our Captain America, even if it was just intended to represent the best character to whom a debt might not be paid back to.   (Continues below)

Comic Book Guy: The Comic Book #1: Cover 4 Crisis on Infinite Earths #7

Cover 4 parodies yet another iconic image, the death of Supergirl that occurred in the limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 issued in October of 1985. Initially I thought that the bullies kneeling below Comic Book Guy assisting Homer was another reference to an image of people kneeling in honor but I believe it may just be illustrating that Homer couldn't hold up CBG by himself.
