This back cover White-Knuckled War Stories No. 1 is in imitation of the war comics genre,
and the design of the cover imitates a series with what I've always thought of as an
unusual name, Two-Fisted Tales, illustrated here with issue #29 from September-October 1952.

This back cover of Simpsons Comics #13 Wedgie #1 takes it's inspiration from Archie comics.
|
|
This cover mirrors many of the elements of the original design of Archie comics
which began in January 1942. Wedgie #1 leverages the
original Archie design, including the font, the most common color pallette, a yellow stripe
across the top proclaiming "Springfield's #1 Hooligan!" instead of "America's Typical Teenager"
and the script "comics" on the lower right, illustrated above to the right with
Archie #37 from January 1949. Bongo then wisely chose to integrate a famous element of
the subsequent design that began in January 1956 with Archie #81, the face of Archie
above the title. This is illustrated to the right with Archie #101 from June 1959, mirrored on
Wedgie with the face of Jimbo.

Part Two appeared below in Simpsons Comics #16.
This Bongo Beat article was subsequently reprinted in Simpsons Comics Royale.
A Trip to Simpsons Mountain begins and ends as a parody of The Waltons, which was based
on the book and subsequent film Spencer's Mountain, and like this Grampa flashback story
is centered on a family in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II.
The Christmas theme of this story mirrors The Waltons series pilot "The Homecoming: A Christmas Story",
and many of the character's names in the story mimick characters on The Waltons.
Although The Waltons did appear on the cover of many TV Guides they weren't
in a sleigh - although they did record "Sleigh Ride" on a 1999 Christmas album.
During this story they also morph through Beverly Hills 90210, The Partridge Family,
Leave it To Beaver and the movie It's a Wonderful Life.
|
The back cover of this comic Heinous Funnies #1 dated December 1933
is an obvious parody of Famous Funnies #1 from July 1934, considered the
first comic. Famous Funnies collected comics from newspapers and continued to do so for hundreds
of issues. I attribute the earlier dating on the Heinous Funnies as a subtle
comment it was the earlier of the two and hence the first comic.
The tilt and font of the Heinous Funnies title and the "No. 1" closely resembles
the style of the original comic.

Simpsons Comics #16 (Jan 1996)
Secure your belongings and fasten your seatbelts! Patty and Selma are in freefall and they're crashing into the Simpsons' living room! It could be an epic tragedy for Homer and his brood unless the nicotine-needy sisters find success in the skies as flight attendants. Sadly for the Simpsons, Patty and Selma's service with a snarl could be an airborne disaster the likes of which even George Kennedy hasn't seen! It's all soaring and sputtering your way in Simpsons Comics #16!

The Junk Mail section invited fans to
"replace the bolt" on Radioactive Man, supplying a page without the
lightning bolt on his head. Submissions from that contest were printed in
Simpsons Comics #21 .
A comic "grab bag" refers to the specific practice of offering a bag of (non-current)
comics at a discount, one observed at all comic trade shows (comic "cons").

Simpsons Comics #17 (Feb 1996)
You are watching the BBC, but put away the tea and crumpets - these shows are coming straight from the land of Duff and donuts! The Bart Broadcasting Channel is up and running and the big boys are running scared! How can Krusty compete with "Lisa Simpson's Joy of Soy"? How can Kent Brockman scoop the hard-hitting journalistic skills of Nelson Muntz? The network wars in Springfield know not of the Geneva Convention and it's gonna get ugly. Attention Nielsen families! -- You're not going to want to miss this one! (Show titles, times, and content is subject to change, so check your local listings.)

Bongo Beat is a memoriam:
Doris Grau (1924-1995), by Matt Groening
Junk Mail section included
The Bongo Take-Home S.A.T. (Simpsons Aptitude Test) a ten plus bonus question quiz
with the answers supplied in Simpsons Comics #18.
Headlight Comics is a slang term referring to the genre of comics
featuring women with prominent anatomy, as illustrated on the flip cover of this issue. See
Wikipedia if that
isn't sufficiently clear.
Just as the titles Headlight Comics and The Dame and the Clown might lead one to suspect,
this is written in hardboiled detective prose, leveraging slang of the period that would make
Raymond Chandler proud. Kudos to Clay Griffith and the rest of the team that put this together.
|
Not a cover, but a look at a KrustyCo faux advertisement within, one older comic book fans might
imagine seems familiar. Sure enough, they've parodied the Spalding advertisement that appeared in comics
from the 1970's on the right! Check out how each panel above on the left duplicated the original panel
on the right.

Simpsons Comics #18 (Mar 1996)
Drop that Twinkie and don't touch those Doritos! Springfield is targeted as the unhealthiest place on Earth, and the Presidential Fitness Program dispatches McBain to whip the cholesterol-clogged town into shape. Hefty government pork awaits the town if it can meet McBain's fitness challenge. SEE - Bart power down a protein shake! SEE - Patty & Selma in inversion boots! (Actually, you might want to skip that page.) In the end, one man can tip the scales for Springfield to win its prize. It's Hungry Homer Simpson against McBain in the biggest, belt-widening brawl you'll ever see between lunch and dinner!

Carl Yastrzemski 1973
|
Carl Yastrzemski 1973 - from story
|
The story The Quest for Yaz hands us the design purpose for the back cover,
where Milhouse attempts to buy a 1973 Carl Yastrzemski
"mutton chops" baseball card for $30, echoing episode
[7F21] Three Men and a Comic Book.
The design of the flip cover is, of course, of a baseball card, but the
design follows the style of the
Topps 1965 card set with the team name in a pennant.
The title "Milhouse" matches the style used in many sports
logos, including the Major League baseball teams Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City Royals.
Milhouse himself however is in the style of Carl Yastrzemski's 1973 card,
which is also accurately displayed within the story.
